P6/7 & P7 Weekly Learning

Week beginning 19th June 2023

Literacy - Primary 7 have been working hard on their personal projects throughout this term. This week we were able to listen to them present their projects to the rest of the class. They were able to provide us with lots of new and interesting information and they gave each other constructive feedback. 

Numeracy - Primary 6/7 have focused on sequencing and patterns this week and they have also been looking at Fibonacci.

P7 Trip - Primary 7 had their end of school trip to Dunfermline. They have all worked very hard fundraising for this event and were able to enjoy a trip to the cinema, pizza hut and the bowling. They all seemed to have a great day and had lots of fun celebrating the end of Primary School.

We have also spent a lot of time practising for our Primary 7 show on Tuesday next week!

Week beginning 12th June 2023

Literacy - Primary 6/7 have been continuing to focus on writing a persuasive text.  They have been looking at the language used and the different features of the text. 

Numeracy – This week Primary 6/7 have been looking at angles of a triangle and angles around a point.  They have also reviewed addition and the different strategies they can use

PE & Playpod – Primary 6 groups planned and led a PE activity this week.  They had to decide the activities, equipment needed and then delivered the lesson.  This was a great opportunity for them to share the skills they have learned in PE this year.  Primary 6 also had the opportunity to spend time with the other P6 class outdoors developing their communication and team building skills. 

Primary 7 only – This week Primary 7 have been focussing on their end of year show and enjoyed their 2-day visit at high school.  It was great to hear all of their stories and experiences during the 2 days.

Week beginning 5th June 2023

Literacy - Primary 7 have continued reading their class novel, Holes and engaging in whole class discussion around the story. 

Numeracy - This week Primary 7 have continued to focus on time by looking at questions around timetables. They have also reviewed addition and subtraction of decimal numbers. Primary 6/7 have spent some time looking at complementary and supplementary angles.

Science - Both classes have completed their Young Stem Leader logs this week, which details their interaction with younger children as they taught them how to use a microbit. 

Outdoor Learning - This week we had our final outdoor learning day for the year. We walked to Pathhead Sands beach where the two classes took part in a litter pick. This allowed them to fulfil the conservation element of their John Muir and Natural Connections Awards. They then spent the afternoon participating in football, rounders, drawing or exploring the natural environment.

Week beginning 29th May 2023

Literacy - Primary 7 have been focusing on Recounts this week. Thye have been writing about their 5K fun run that they completed last week.  Primary 6/7 have chosen a topic area and been researching arguments for and against in preparation for a persuasive text.

Numeracy - Both classes have been looking at angles this week.  We have been looking at the different types of angles and understanding how to use a protractor to measure and draw angles. We have also continued to focus on time by exploring different time zones around the world.

Special Visitor – This week the children were able to participate in a mini First Aid course which introduced them to various aspects of First Aid.  The children were learning about how to carry out CPR, what to do if someone is choking and how to put someone in the recovery position.   

Outdoor Learning – P6/7 and P7 led a group of activities with our P2/3 and P3 classes this week at Ravenscraig Park.   The activities included Den Building, Nature Art and Tower Building.  This was an opportunity for P6/7 and P7 to share what they have been learning as part of outdoor learning this year with the younger children.

Week beginning 22nd May 2023

Literacy - Primary 7 from both classes were visited again by the English department at Balwearie. This week they did some writing and those who will be attending Balwearie were able to write straight into their S1 jotters. Primary 7s also had a look back at their recounts and discussed all of the essential features of a recount as we planned for our writing next week. Primary 6/7 have been looking at persuasive writing and identifying the features of a persuasive text.

Numeracy - Both classes have continued looking at fractions, decimals and percentages and their relationship to one another. We have also explored time by looking at 24 hour and 12 hour clocks and time intervals. 

P.E. - Both classes have been busy practising for sports day on Friday of this week. 

Primary 7 - Took part in their 5k Fun Run at the Beveridge Park. All of them really pushed themselves to complete the race.

Week beginning 15th May 2023

Literacy - This week Primary 6/7 have been using co-operative feedback to support them assessing their recount writing.  They have been identifying their progress and what their next steps are in their learning.  This week the P7's had a visit from the English Department at Balwearie High School.   They looked at a text and started to prepare their own piece of writing which they will complete next week. 

Numeracy - This week both classes have continued with their focus on perimeter, area and volume.  We have also been looking at the relationship between fractions, decimals and percentages with a specific focus on identifying fractions of an amount. 

Gym - Both classes have started their preparation for next weeks Sports Day.  We have been practicing our flat race, potato and spoon, quoit on head and three legged races.

Week beginning 8th May 2023

 

Literacy - This week Primary 6/7 have continued with their focus on writing a recount. Primary 7 have completed their warning stories following the Talk for Writing scheme and have self assessed their work. We have also continued to explore our class novel - Holes and have discussed characterisation. 

Numeracy - Both classes have spent some time working on area and perimeter. Primary 6/7 have worked with percentages and their relationship to fractions. Primary 7 are beginning to look at addition and subtraction using fractions. Both classes have also looked at time.

P7 Events - P7 have held their bake sale this week. They worked really hard by bringing in lots of cakes to sell and they all took part in selling to the younger classes. We were pleased with what we were able to raise, which we will be able to put towards our end of term trip.

Week beginning 1st May 2023

 

Literacy - This week Primary 7 have continued with their focus on creating a Warning Story. We have created our Warning Story Toolkit and have begun our own writing. Primary 6/7 have continued with their focus on recounts by looking at how to create an effective introduction using the 5ws. 

Numeracy - Both classes have spent some more time looking at 2D and 3D shape. We used materials to build 3D shapes and identified the number of vertices, edges and faces. We have also continued working with fractions by finding the fraction of a number and by adding and subtracting fractions. 

Navy Visit - The Navy came to visit P6-7 this week. They spoke to us all about the different branches of the Navy and the different jobs you can have. We then took part in team challenges by constructing different models. 

Primary 7 have also begun practising for our show this week.

Week beginning 24th April 2023

 

 

Literacy - P7 have continued to work on analysing a warning story and have begun to select all of the key features of this type of text in preparation for our writing next week. P6/7 have continued with their focus on recount and have particularly looked at how to create an effective introduction that includes the 5 w's. 

Numeracy - Both classes have carried on with our focus on fractions by looking at fractions on a number line and fractions of a number. We have also looked more closely at the properties of different 2D and 3D shapes.

P7 - Have had their second transition event at Beveridge Park meeting all of the P7s from the cluster schools and taking part in lots of fun activities that were arranged by the college students. This was a great opportunity to meet new people in preparation for high school. P7s have also begun to plan out their yearbook and end of year trip. 

 

 

 

 

Week beginning 17th April 2023

 

 

Literacy – This week we have moved onto a new writing genre.  The children have been learning about the features of writing a recount.  Over the coming weeks we will be developing our confidence in writing different types of recounts.

Numeracy – This week we are continuing with our topic, fractions.  We have been looking at equivalent fractions and ordering fractions.  This has included comparing fractions with the same and different denominators.   

Gym - Both classes took part in cross country running trials and some of us got to go to Burntisland to play football or netball. 

P7s - The Primary 7s have got their hoodies this week and are looking forward to being able to wear them next week to our transition day at Beveridge Park. 

 

 

 

Week beginning 20th March 2023

 

 

Literacy – This week we have been looking at our class novel Divided City.  We have been using the story to develop our comprehension skills and have been exploring areas including stereotypes, discrimination, prejudice and sectarianism. 

Numeracy – This week we have started our new numeracy topic fractions.  We have been looking at equivalent fractions and its relationship with multiplication and division.   

Outdoor Learning – We have been developing our skills in map reading and orienteering.  We visited Beveridge Park and took part in Orienteering.  We looked at the different skills required in orienteering and how to read maps to help navigate the course.    We have continued this in class by creating our own aerial maps.

Week beginning 13th March 2023

 

  

P7 Transition - This week Primary 7s from both classes took part in their first transition event in preparation for High School. We took the train to Burntisland where we met up with P7s from Kinghorn and Burntisland Primary schools. We took part in lots of different activities and were able to build our confidence when meeting new people. We are looking forward to our next event at Beveridge Park where we will meet more P7s from the other cluster schools. 

British Science Week - This week both classes have enjoyed taking part in lots of different science activities whilst celebrating British Science Week. We have explored our problem solving and engineering skills through a bridge building lesson. We also had another visit from an engineer and worked on creating a circuit. We had a visit from a group of S6s from Balwearie who are Young Stem Leaders. They organised lots of different experiments for us to engage with and that we will be able to teach to younger children in the future.

 Week beginning 6th March 2023

 

  

Literacy - This week we have moved onto a new genre as our focus for our writing. For the next few weeks we will be developing our confidence writing a warning story. Both classes have continued with our class novel, Divided City and have begun to explore the theme of discrimination. 

Numeracy - We have put our learning about the four operations to the test by attempting to solve real life problems. We have also continued to explore measure and converting between different units. 

Topic - We have almost completed our WW1 trenches, which we have worked really hard on. They are starting to look very realistic. 

Science - We have created our annotated illustrations for our invention for the Young Engineer competition. We also spent some time writing a persuasive letter to accompany our invention, which explained how it could benefit society.

Week beginning 27th February 2023

 

World Book Day - In Primary 6/7 and Primary 7 we really enjoyed celebrating World Book Day this year. In Primary 7 we continued with our focus on measure by following a recipe to bake gingerbread men. Primary 6/7 similarly created playdough. We then decorated our creations to look like characters from books that we know. Whilst at Playpod we worked in groups using the loose parts to act out a part of a familiar story, which we performed to the two classes. Primary 7 also enjoyed reading with Primary 3. Both classes created a design for a book token, which we will enter into a competition.
